PLANT/SOIL SCIENCE 9,10,11,12

This course is designed for the science and/or agriculturally oriented student. It covers soil formation, classification, organic matter, plant and animal life in the soil, how plants grow, liming soils, chemical and organic fertilizers, soil and water conservation and land judging. These concepts will be applied to all crops raised in Gratiot County. Instruction will be in class with field trips and laboratory experience used for skill development. Leadership emphasis will be on public speaking which will provide for participation in FFA, which is strongly encouraged.
GRADING: Grades are based on homework, tests, quizzes and class participation.
OUTCOMES:
1. Students shall understand growth and development of plants, including the functions of plant parts and reproductive systems.
2. Students will understand the role of soil in plant production, including factors which affect soil productivity.
3. Students shall understand the role of nutrients in plant growth and development.
4. Students shall understand the biology of pests and their impact on agriculture with special reference to socio-economic and environmentally sound pest management.
5. Students shall understand the concept of land measurement and land descriptions.
